The Sacramento History Museum – in partnership with the California State Railroad Museum, Center for Sacramento History and the Crocker Art Museum – is proud to present the Gold Spike Lecture Series that will take place  through September 2019.

Earmarked by an exciting line-up of guest speakers and a variety of compelling topics, the lectures and book signing events will take place at various local museums.

PHOTOGRAPHING THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD

Saturday, September 7, 2019, 2 P.M. – Glenn Willumson, Professor Emeritus University of Florida Glenn Willumsonprofessor emeritus at the University of Florida, and author of Iron Muse: Photographing the Transcontinental Railroad, will discuss the history and myth-making of the American West created by the power of visual images largely viewed via stereotypes. Location: Crocker Art Museum

THE CREATION OF THE TRANSCONTINENTAL RAILROAD FROM 1842 TO ITS COMPLETION

Thursday, September 26, 7 P.M. – David Haward Bain, Author & Senior Lecturer of English and American Literature at Middlebury College, takes a look back at the creation and building of the Transcontinental Railroad, arguably the single greatest technological feat of the 19th century, based on his award-winning book Empire Express: Building the First Transcontinental Railroad.
